“Safety” and “cleanliness” are of outstanding importance for quality of life and well-being in a city.
Since 2007
Why this project exists
That is why, shortly after taking office in 2007, I launched the “Salzgitter – Safe and Clean” project to strengthen public order, safety and cleanliness in the city through targeted measures.
Current social developments and challenges now call for those measures to be prioritised, consistently continued, expanded and intensified.
Recognised norms, rules and standards of harmonious coexistence and respectful conduct are being disregarded by parts of our society, even if only by a minority.
What this is about
Examples from across the city
- Recycling points misused as rubbish dumps
- Careless disposal of waste in nature, at Lake Salzgitter and even in residential areas
- Cars and vans parked long-term without registration
- Wilful damage to public facilities and private property
- Hostility towards and insults against municipal staff who want and need to enforce our rules
This disrespectful behaviour by a minority reduces quality of life and endangers both our social fabric and our sense of community.

The aim of “Safe and Clean 2.0”
The aim of the “Salzgitter – Safe and Clean 2.0” project, which I updated and launched in November 2024 together with my First City Councillor Eric Neiseke and my head of department Simone Kessner, is to counter these negative trends decisively and lastingly.
Enforcement, monitoring and cleaning
Secondly, we have stepped up our monitoring and enforcement work in cooperation with the police, as well as the frequency with which illegally dumped waste is removed across the city and the town centres of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt and Salzgitter-Bad are cleaned.
Measures
What is being done in concrete terms
Intervals and checks have been increased through:
- More staff in the municipal public order service, in waste collection and in street cleaning
- Greater visibility and consistent penalties for regulatory offences, particularly in some conspicuous neighbourhoods, through fines
- Higher fines for the offences concerned
- Simpler ways to report offences and illegally dumped waste
A long and stony road
I will continue this project with my administration consistently and as a priority, fully aware that it will be a long and stony road. I am counting in particular on your support. Only together can we make this project a success.
